It is not a great idea to try to unlock phones that you do not have any other equipment to test. There are a few tools out there that may allow you to unlock the phones but many of them are either incomplete or in certain cases will cause other issues when flashing.
In the past many tools that work for normal phones do not work for BB, and vice versa, some normal models don't have the right software to interact with these tools and still others do not work the same way. I have not personally seen a free tool that works on all BBs, but I am not a developer.
If you are not comfortable flashing your phone without a plan, I recommend you get yourself a cheap Motorola phone from eBay or one of the second hand phones from Amazon, etc. We have a lot of Motorola phones around here that all work on T-Mobile and Verizon and sometimes on AT&T.
It is also worth noting that the BB's running on Sprint and Verizon will work on AT&T and T-Mobile when paired with a cross-over or tri-band phone, though some BB's will not work on AT&T (ie 8520) when paired with the regular tri-band phones.
To unlock devices not supported by the system tool, you can use a custom ROM
If your device is supported by CyanogenMod (or an equivalent), it is possible to install a custom ROM. As of now, only five devices are supported:
Nexus One
Galaxy S
HTC Sensation
LG Optimus One
LG Optimus Pro
If your device is not supported, then you have no option.
In short, check if your phone is supported and then use an appropriate custom ROM for your phone.

VSTS Test plan task - exclude test from the build (not from the test-run)?
Is it possible to have a test task inside the build task in the VSTS Test Plan, that will not run for every build but will just be run whenever you run the test-run?
I have tried in vain to get the task to get excluded
